We all know the importance of backlinks, but how can you get more of them pointing to your website?
I thought I’d use my first blog of 2020 to explain what backlinks are and how you can (easily and often for free) make the most of this important SEO metric for your firm.
So, what is a backlink? Quite simply, it’s a hyperlink on an external website that points to your website. Also called external backlinks or inbound links, they will help you boost your search engine ranking on Google or Bing, which can subsequently give your website an increase in traffic. And the more authoritative websites that link to your site, the better the rankings and ‘quality’ traffic you’ll get.
Now let’s look at some advice on how you can get more links pointing to your site.
Write quality content
We often talk about the importance of creating your own content, and this is one of the key reasons why. Link-worthy content will interest industry thought leaders and bloggers, giving them the opportunity to link back to your site.
Of course, they will only share your content if it’s high-quality. Relevant and engaging content will improve your chances of getting backlinks. It can be more than just blogs though. Your white papers, reports and how to guides are also great for getting backlinks. Professional Services is a truly great industry for getting backlinks, because of our knowledge and expertise, so use that to your advantage.
Interviews with the online media are a great way to build more backlinks. Find out which websites and publications regularly run interview features relevant to your niche. Use your expertise and introduce yourself and say you’d be keen to contribute. It can be a numbers game as online editors will get a number of requests, but the payoff will be worth it.
One tip here: Twitter is a good way to get in touch with journalists. The #journorequest hashtag on Twitter is used by journalists who are looking for sources for their upcoming stories. All you need to do is to follow the hashtag and reply to relevant queries for a chance to get featured, and get a mention or backlink to your website.
Connect with partners
You needn’t look far to get reputable backlinks. Connecting with partners who have a well-established digital presence can be an easy way into getting more of those precious backlinks. Proposing to write a guest post on their blog can be a win-win for both parties: they will get free, quality content and you will get backlinks to your site.
Connect with experts on Linkedin
Joining Linkedin groups in your industry is a great way to connect with your target audience. Contribute to the group and add value by sharing relevant industry trends and insights. Share your own content. By making these connections, you’re growing your network. Growing the network can lead to opportunities to write guest blogs or partake in interviews, ultimately increasing your backlinks.
Monitor your competitors
Staying up to date with your main competitors’ digital strategies is essential if you want to get more organic traffic. Keep a close eye on their link-building techniques, you can then replicate key strategies.
Ensure you are subscribed to their email newsletters and are following them on social media and set up alerts for when competitors are publishing new content on their websites. You can do this by creating a Google alert. For instance, if your competitor is ABC Consultants, set your alert using the keyword: site:abcconsultants.com. This will ensure you are on top of all their posts and outputs.
I’ve mentioned this a few times above, but guest blogging is a tried and true method that guarantees at least 1 backlink to your site.
It’s not easy to achieve though. Reputable sites get inundated with requests, and even a brilliant pitch could leave you waiting for months until you hear back from the editor. The key is to build trusted relationships with editors and your partners.
If you’re running out of ideas of sites that might accept your content, use Google search queries to find other blogs that accept guest contributors:
- your keyword + inurl:write-for-us
- your keyword + guest-posts
- your keyword + inurl:guest-post-guidelines
- your keyword + become a contributor
- your keyword + bloggers wanted
- your keyword + submit an article
- your keyword + want to write for
- your keyword + contribute
- your keyword + become an author
- your keyword + guest post by
- your keyword + now accepting guest posts
As well as helping build your backlinks, guest blogging will also increase your social media followers and digital presence.
So, in conclusion, earning quality backlinks isn’t always an easy task, but hopefully these tips will help spark some ideas. Remember, for any of your SEO strategies to be effective, your content needs to be relevant and engaging. Get this right and start adopting some of the key principles above and you will start to see the increases in your backlink profile and your SEO. It’ll be worth the hard work.
